In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
