Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of materials that included little new data.
