The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
