The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
