The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
