Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
